Jaguar made a sensational decision in producing the XKR-S Coupe and they have decided it’s time to expand the impressive line-up with the addition of a new Convertible model. The new XKR-S Convertible made its world debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and is the most powerful and fastest open-topped GT Jaguar has ever built. The convertible uses the same 5.0-liter supercharged AJ-V8 engine as the coupe version. It delivers a total of 543 HP and a peak torque of 502 lbs-ft; enough power to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds on its way up to a top speed of 186 mph. Special editions of fancy cars aren’t always our cup of tea, but in the case of the new Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition, you won’t find us complaining. Two reasons: first, the XKR is a great car in any garb, and second, because Jaguar happily exercised a modicum of restraint in making this the pick of the litter. So what makes this limited-edition super-cat so particularly well bred? Besides the usual exterior bits, such as its blue-black metallic paint (called "Celestial Black" and exclusive to the Portfolio), Jaguar took advantage of all that space under its 20-inch "Cremona" wheels to install Jaguar’s biggest-ever brake discs: 15.8 inches in front, 13.8 in back, each etched with crescent-shapes grooves for improved ventilation and clamped by bright red calipers. A sign of how desperate things have gotten for Jaguar in the U.S. market is that its bestselling model line is the low-volume, relatively expensive XK coupe and convertible, with 4487 sales in 2007. That’s 28.6 percent of the company’s admittedly paltry sales of 15,683. One reason that it’s Jaguar’s bestselling car is because it’s currently Jaguar’s best vehicle. When we compared an XK convertible with four other luxury cabrios in the August 2006 issue [“Convertible Currency”], it finished a respectable third and impressed our traveling band of automotive sages enough that we decreed a 40,000-mile evaluation was in order. If a classic design is one that is timeless, one that doesn’t depend on having style-of-the-minute looks to turn heads and gather looks of approval, then the Jaguar XK8 is a modern classic. By the standards of the contemporary auto industry, it’s an old car. It was introduced in Europe in late 1996 and made its way into the U.S. a year later, and has had only relatively minor changes since. And that doesn’t matter at all, because it’s still drop-dead gorgeous and is still a unique choice in the premium sports car class. The XK8 created quite a stir when it debuted. It was the first new Jaguar to be developed under Ford ownership, as Ford had rescued the then-foundering British manufacturer in 1989. Any fears of a re-badged Ford were unfounded. The XK8′s AJ-V8 engine – completely a product of Jaguar, with no Ford heritage – was only the fourth all-new engine in the company’s history, and took the place of both the venerable XK inline six, with roots in the late 1940s, and the V12 developed in the 1970s. Jaguar North America unveiled the second edition of the XK180 roadster concept at the 1998 North American International Auto Show. This fully operational prototype is a further-developed version of the original XK180 concept car, which debuted at last fall’s Paris Motor Show. Like the first XK180, this vehicle is a product of Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), hand-built in the SVO shops at Browns Lane in Coventry, England. The second-edition car is better adapted for American driving conditions with left hand drive, and it embodies a number of detail changes, including a new wheel design, a revised shade for the exterior color, a switch in the hue of the interior leather and subtle modifications to feature lines on the lower body section. The 1996 Jaguar XJS convertible is available in one model for its final year of production. Standard safety features include dual airbags, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) and 1997 side-impact protection. A 4.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine producing 237 horsepower, a 4-speed automatic transmission, limited-slip differential, independent suspension, and power steering are standard equipment. Other standard features include air conditioning, Connolly leather interior, walnut trim, a security system, power windows, a premium audio system and a central-locking system.
